Making the world’s electric grid visible so everyone can access clean, reliable energy

About Tapestry

Tapestry is X’s moonshot for the electric grid

The electric grid is an engineering marvel: a vast and complex machine that connects us all and powers the devices that are now essential to our everyday lives. Designed more than a century ago to function like a one-way highway, with electricity flowing from fossil-fueled power plants to cities and towns, it’s grown increasingly complex. Today’s grid looks more like a multidirectional superhighway, with millions of devices—from home solar panels and wind farms to microgrids and electric vehicles—pushing and pulling energy across it at all times.

Not only was the grid not built for today’s demands, but nobody currently has the tools they need to see, manage or plan it. Information is siloed between dozens of different organizations, and no one has a complete picture of the grid. To transition to a carbon-free, reliable electric grid, we need a shared understanding of how we make, move, and use electricity.

Tapestry’s mission is to make the grid visible. By making the grid visible to everyone who works with it, we aim to make it greener, fairer, and more reliable for everyone who depends on it.

AI-powered products for a greener and more reliable future grid

By creating the most complete and precise model, Tapestry is working to transform a grid that is complex, fragmented, and under pressure into a grid that generations can count on. The team is developing a range of AI-powered tools to help everyone who plans, builds, operates, and manages all aspects of the grid.

GridAware

GridAware is a set of intelligence, planning, and operations tools to manage and modernize the distribution grid.

To maintain the health of the grid, utilities run routine inspections of assets like poles and transformers to identify and repair things like sagging power lines or damaged poles. Today, these inspections are highly manual and time-consuming, which means utilities are often only able to inspect a fraction of their assets each year.

GridAware accelerates and automates the inspection process by collecting images of assets and uses machine learning to identify defects. By mapping all of these assets, GridAware aims to transform asset and grid topology information into a simulatable model of a power distribution grid. This will offer utility companies the tools and insights they need to maintain reliable grids for their communities.

Grid Planning Tool

The Grid Planning Tool empowers large-scale, long-term grid simulation at hourly resolution that allows for more efficient planning and reliable interconnection of renewables.

Before grid operators can make big decisions like decommissioning a coal plant, they must ensure the grid can operate reliably without it. To do this, they run hundreds of simulations that model a range of different scenarios, sometimes decades into the future. For example, what if there was a low wind day during a heat wave, causing a spike in power usage?

Tapestry’s Grid Planning Tool transforms a process that can take days or weeks into just minutes.
