Teaching code to write and rewrite itself

Graduated to Google/2023

The AIDA team created a natural-language AI assistant that helps developers write code, debug code, and learn new concepts. While at X the team developed their technology foundations. After moving to Google, the team went on to create a range of products that help developers be more creative and productive.

What If Code Could Write Itself?

In 2018, a small team of engineers at X set out to explore if it was possible for code to write and rewrite itself. Their mission was to free developers from time-consuming menial tasks like fixing bugs or updating old code so they could spend more time doing creative work.

In X’s rapid prototyping environment, the team explored how AI could transform some of the most painful parts of coding software development and help developers focus on more creative work. After four years  prototyping their technology, the team moved to Google to scale up their work.

At Google I/O in 2023 the AIDA team launched a number of products including Codey a code generation foundational model,  Code Tips, which provides pointers for writing code faster and smarter; Android Studio Bot, a coding companion for Android developers; and Duet AI, an AI collaborator that provides developers with real-time code suggestions and chat assistance.

AIDA Today

Technology created by the AIDA team is now integrated into a range of Google developer products. The team is continuing to develop tools and products to streamline the coding process, including technology that will help non-developers understand and create code. They hope to ultimately create a set of products to streamline the entire developer workflow.
