The AmberCollection

Resources from the project to measure mental health

Setting out to find a biomarker for depression, the Amber team developed an easy-to-use, low-cost EEG system, and explored how machine learning could be applied to interpreting EEG data. The team didn’t succeed in finding a single biomarker for depression, but they did see a huge opportunity for technology to enable better measurement.

After closing the project in 2020, the team made Amber’s technology and insights available to the global mental health community. Amber open-sourced its hardware designs and software, and pledged the free use of the team’s patents and applications. In addition, Amber donated 50 assembled Amber prototype devices to the Human Brain Diversity Project, which supports EEG research globally, with an emphasis on low-income countries and underrepresented groups.
