About Tapestry
Tapestry is a group within Google working to build the AI-powered electric grid. We are tackling one of the world’s most important infrastructure challenges: helping the energy system become more visible, understandable, reliable, affordable, abundant, and clean.
Originally born at X, Alphabet’s moonshot factory, Tapestry brings together experts in energy, AI, software engineering, and products to build tools that help the electricity ecosystem plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently.
This is a global effort. Tapestry supports partners across the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia, and Brazil as they work toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry means doing high-impact work with a multidisciplinary team tackling a problem that matters at global scale. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the role:
As a Network Security Engineer within the Network Security pillar of Tapestry Security (TAPSEC), you will own the architectural design, implementation, and operations of our perimeter and cloud networks. You will secure inter-application connectivity across our GCP environments, protecting our AI-powered electric grid platforms from external threat actors, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks across all OSI layers, and unauthorized access. You will establish and enforce security controls, guardrails, and compliance policies while proactively auditing our network for vulnerabilities and driving engineering resolutions.
How you will make 10X Impact
- Design, deploy, and govern secure GCP networking architecture, including VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC) and zero default VPC configurations to ensure secure connectivity and strictly prevent the use of public endpoints.
- Leverage specific GCP network security tools including Cloud Armor, VPC Service Controls, Cloud NAT, and Private Service Connect to enforce a private-only network perimeter and prevent public access to production resources.
- Protect Tapestry's global grid infrastructure from multi-layer Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) threats, ensuring resilient, high-availability connectivity across all seven layers of the OSI model.
- Engineer and codify security policies as Terraform code (Security as Code), ensuring that every firewall rule, VPC peering, and access control is automated, version-controlled, and audited.
- Audit cloud and perimeter networks for security gaps, misconfigurations, and drift, actively partnering with engineering teams to drive rapid vulnerability resolutions.
- Implement robust boundary controls, secure inter-app connectivity, and ensure no external IP addresses or unauthenticated boundary paths exist across production systems.
- Align our network architecture with strict compliance frameworks and security guardrails, including ISO 27001, SOC 2, and energy-specific standards like NERC CIP and FERC CEII enclaves.
- Partner cross-functionally with AppSec, SecEng/Ops, DataSec, DevOps and Grid Engineering teams to integrate comprehensive network security monitoring and telemetry, leveraging VPC Flow Logs, Firewall Rules Logging, and Packet Mirroring to gain granular visibility into network traffic and identify anomalies.
What you should have…
- Bachelor's or Master’s in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in network security engineering, cloud-native security, or a closely related infrastructure security field.
- Deep expertise in cloud networking security, including experience with GCP services like VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC), Cloud Armor, Cloud IDS, and Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP).
- Strong technical understanding of networking protocols, perimeter defenses, and DDoS mitigation strategies across all layers of the OSI model.
- Proven experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools, specifically Terraform, for building and managing security policies as code.
- Strong analytical and first-principles problem-solving skills, with a passion for securing the software systems that power the global electric grid.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to navigate technical ambiguity and align cross-functional engineering teams on secure design patterns.
It’d be great if you also had one or more of these:
- Experience securing high-stakes, regulated energy utility systems or critical infrastructure environments complying with NERC CIP or FERC.
- Experience with automated security scanning tools (SAST, DAST, SCA) and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, etc.).
- Track record of delivering scalable cloud infrastructure security solutions in high-growth or startup-like environments.
