About Tapestry
Tapestry is Alphabet’s moonshot for the electric grid, working at the frontier where energy’s complexity meets AI’s potential. We were born at X, the innovation lab responsible for breakthrough technologies like Waymo, Verily and Google Brain.
To keep pace with humanity’s growing energy needs, the world needs a grid that is visible and understandable. We provide that clarity by building advanced, AI-enabled analytical and planning tools that allow the entire energy ecosystem to plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently—ensuring electricity remains reliable and affordable for everyone.
This is a global effort. Tapestry is proud to support partners in the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil as they build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry allows you to do the best work of your life as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering and product design—all collaborating to reshape energy on a global scale. If you want to tackle problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the Role: The Architect of Expert Interfaces
As the Head of Product Design for Tapestry, you will be the primary architect of how expert users interact with complex energy systems through the lens of artificial intelligence. In this role, you will balance setting the strategic direction and mentoring the design team with high-impact, hands-on design work. You will be the driving force behind defining and evolving our design system, ensuring it scales across a suite of sophisticated, agentic tools that empower grid operators to manage hyper-scale infrastructure.
In an AI-driven world, the traditional, rigid design process starting with exhaustive research artifacts and personas is often too slow. We are looking for a leader who values designer judgment and intuition over worshipping process artifacts. You will collaborate deeply with Product Management and Engineering to define AI-first workflows, moving toward automated insights, "git-like" model branching for grid proposals, and human-in-the-loop decision systems.
How You Will Make 10X Impact
- Design System Stewardship: Lead the hands-on creation and evolution of a purpose-built design system. Move Tapestry toward a cutting-edge, domain-specific UI language that prioritizes innovative, high-performance, technical workflows appropriate for grid operators.
- Strategic Leadership: Define the long-term product design vision and strategy that aligns with Tapestry’s mission to decarbonize the grid, while providing guidance and mentorship to a growing team of designers.
- Solution-First Prototyping: Move from concept to code quickly by starting from solutions and building high-fidelity prototypes that leverage AI to accelerate development.
- AI-First Interaction Design: Partner with PMs and Engineering to architect next-generation workflows where AI models are the core engine, moving away from manual data entry toward automated insights.
- Extreme Craft & Detail: In a world where AI can generate layouts, "craft" is the key differentiator. You will resolve foundational visualization challenges—like complex map styling and high-density data tables—with rigorous, high-fidelity systems thinking.
- Expert Trust & Safety: Design interfaces that allow risk-conscious operators to evaluate AI logic, providing transparency into "why" an AI is recommending a critical action like a power shutdown.
Who You Are
- An Intuitive Builder & Leader: You believe the design process should be agile and solution-oriented. You have the deep intuition necessary to focus on shipping real value and the leadership skills to elevate the team's output.
- AI-Native Designer: You have a portfolio showcasing shipped products that leverage AI/ML as the primary way users interact with complex data.
- Systems Specialist: You don't just design screens; you design frameworks. You understand how UI choices impact long-term scalability and design debt.
- Deeply Collaborative: You thrive in a high-ownership environment where design, engineering, and product management "weave together" to achieve shared goals.
What You Should Have
- 10+ years of product design experience, with a focus on enterprise/B2B SaaS and complex data visualization on large screens.
- Technical Fluency & Growth Mindset: Deep understanding of AI/ML deployment combined with a relentless desire to learn new technical domains quickly.
- Design System Experience: Proven track record of building and maintaining scalable design systems for complex, data-heavy applications.
- Leadership Experience: Experience setting strategic direction and managing designers, with a desire to remain "in the work" as a lead practitioner.
- Proven Success: Experience shipping products at companies known for high-craft, data-ambitious design.
