About Tapestry
Tapestry is an energy intelligence company incubated at X, the Moonshot Factory, the innovation lab within Alphabet. We are building the intelligence layer for the future electric grid. Our mission is to make the grid visible, predictable, and optimized through advanced AI systems so clean and reliable energy is available for everyone.
The grid is one of the most important and complex systems in the world. It is under increasing pressure from electrification, renewable adoption, and climate-driven volatility. Tapestry creates the software and models that help utilities and grid operators understand what is happening, anticipate what is coming, and respond with confidence.
Our team brings together experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering, and product design. We operate with the agility of a young company supported by the technical rigor and resources in Alphabet’s ecosystem.
If you want to work on problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you.
About the role:
As a Computational Scientist in Grid Simulations, you will be the architect of our high-fidelity simulation engines. Your work sits at the intersection of power systems physics and high-performance computing. You won’t just be using existing tools; you will be designing the codes and algorithms that allow us to model the dynamic behavior of the grid on modern, powerful hardware.
This role is about bridging the gap between complex physical systems and scalable software architectures. If you are passionate about numerical analysis, differential equations, and building the "digital twin" that will enable a more resilient and stable energy future, we want you on the team.
How you’ll make 10x impact:
In this role you will...
- Work with power system and software engineering experts on the design and creation of advanced simulation tools for the power grid.
- Develop codes and algorithms specifically designed to take full advantage of powerful, modern computer hardware.
- Optimize simulation performance to allow for rapid iterative testing of grid resilience and stability under various carbon-free scenarios.
- Advance the state-of-the-art in grid modeling by implementing new techniques for handling high-frequency power electronics and transient events.
- Will serve as a core contributor to the development of high-fidelity simulation engines that model the dynamic behavior of modern power grids.
- Work will bridge the gap between complex physical power systems and scalable software architectures to ensure simulation accuracy at scale.
- Will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to integrate simulation results into actionable insights for grid operators and partners.
What you should have:
- Master or PhD in a STEM field (such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field) with a strong interest in grid simulations and computations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Power Systems and Power Electronics fundamentals, coupled with a background in the development of simulation software.
- At least a minimum of 2 years professional experience focused on power systems modeling and simulation principles.
- Experience in one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Python, Java, or C/C++.
- Proficiency in numerical analysis, such as time discretionary, solving linear and nonlinear differential equations, and techniques for integration and differentiation.
- Familiarity with standard power system simulation packages and the underlying mathematical frameworks they utilize.
It’d be great if you had these:
- Experience conducting power system planning and interconnection studies.
- Are a skilled and efficient programmer in scientific programming languages (e.g, JAX, C++, Julia, etc.) with a desire to expand into new areas of coding languages and processes.
- Familiar with Machine Learning concepts.
