About Tapestry
Tapestry is Alphabet’s moonshot for the electric grid, working at the frontier where energy’s complexity meets AI’s potential. We were born at X, the innovation lab responsible for breakthrough technologies like Waymo, Verily and Google Brain.
To keep pace with humanity’s growing energy needs, the world needs a grid that is visible and understandable. We provide that clarity by building advanced, AI-enabled analytical and planning tools that allow the entire energy ecosystem to plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently—ensuring electricity remains reliable and affordable for everyone.
This is a global effort. Tapestry is proud to support partners in the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil as they build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry allows you to do the best work of your life as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering and product design—all collaborating to reshape energy on a global scale. If you want to tackle problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the role
At Tapestry, data drives all our decision-making. Data Scientists work across the organization to help shape our business and technical strategies by processing, analyzing and interpreting huge data sets. You will proactively explore and define new problem spaces, establishing the rigorous data integrity required to support advanced analysis, ML/AI, and cross-functional collaboration. Your mission is to deliver innovative, data-driven solutions that accelerate product advancement, drive business value, and fundamentally improve how we manage, plan and operate the electric grid.
How you’ll make 10x impact:
- Architect Production Pipelines: Apply state-of-the-art data science techniques to build and deploy scalable data pipelines and automated evaluation frameworks for petabyte-scale datasets.
- Statistical Validation: Research and develop analytical methods for forecasting, optimization, computer vision and LLMs applications, applying statistical rigor to evaluate model behavior,, and live experiments.
- System Evaluation: Design and implement quantitative evaluation processes to measure the true performance and reliability of AI-powered systems.
- Iterative Prototyping: Build and deploy analysis pipelines iteratively to provide model insights at scale, ensuring they meet the high bar required for grid-critical applications.
- Technical Synergy: Partner directly with Power System Experts and ML Engineers to translate product requirements into engineering and machine learning problems, and interpret solutions to inform future product decisions and roadmaps
What you should have:
- PhD or Master’s in a quantitative field and 5+ years of tech or energy industry work experience as a statistician, quantitative analyst, or data scientist.
- Fluency in Python, SQL, R, Pandas, Scikit-Learn, other ML frameworks as appropriate.
- Experience with electric power grid data, and physics based understanding of electrical networks and utility data. Ability to bridge the gap between power systems and machine learning.
- Experience in multivariate analysis, stochastic models, and sampling methods. Able to select the right statistical tool to solve for bias, variance, and data drift.
- Applied experience with building comprehensive machine learning model evaluation tooling and processes on large datasets
- Experience with cloud hosting services and storage of both unstructured and structured data.
- Experience with processing live data streams, including sampling, synchronization, and quantification.
- Demonstrate strong collaboration with software engineering and cross functional teams to build ML-powered systems ready for production.
It’d be great if you had these:
- Ability to thrive in ambiguity, set own goals and effectively delivering to them in a very fast-changing environment
- Ability to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams who do not report into this role to get things done
- Distinctive problem solving and analysis skills, combined with impeccable business judgment, leadership skills, and ability to communicate with a senior management team
- Attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills
- Fast learner with capacity to learn about a wide-spread of different technologies & industries
- Passion for the energy and climate space
