About Tapestry
Tapestry is Alphabet’s moonshot for the electric grid, working at the frontier where energy’s complexity meets AI’s potential. We were born at X, the innovation lab responsible for breakthrough technologies like Waymo, Verily and Google Brain.
To keep pace with humanity’s growing energy needs, the world needs a grid that is visible and understandable. We provide that clarity by building advanced, AI-enabled analytical and planning tools that allow the entire energy ecosystem to plan smarter, move faster, and operate more efficiently—ensuring electricity remains reliable and affordable for everyone.
This is a global effort. Tapestry is proud to support partners in the U.S., U.K., Chile, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil as they build a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining Tapestry allows you to do the best work of your life as part of a multidisciplinary team of experts in AI, energy systems, software engineering and product design—all collaborating to reshape energy on a global scale. If you want to tackle problems that matter and build tools with real impact, we would love to meet you. Learn more about our team and our mission here.
About the role:
Tapestry, a fast-paced team within X (formerly Google X) is looking for a power system specialist with a strong background in distribution planning and a deep understanding of the challenges distribution utilities are facing. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in working with both the external partners as well as the internal cross functional team in Tapestry, focusing on distribution modeling and simulation.
How you will make 10x impact:
- Architect and define the next generation of grid planning workflows. Develop and translate product visions and strategy into engineering specifications and scalable user-centric design.
- Serve as the deep domain thought leader for cross-functional teams, collaborating closely with software engineers, designers, product managers, and external partners.
- Lead technical validation of our tools, ensuring breakthrough technology.
- Pioneer methods for ingesting and normalizing complex, real-world utility data at scale.
What you should have:
- Bachelors or Masters in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related technical fields.
- 5+ years of experience in power systems analysis and distribution planning at an electric utility or consultancy.
- Strong understanding of power system principles, including power flow, short circuit analysis, contingency analysis, and power factor correction.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g. CYME, Synergi Electric, Power Factory, GridLab-D, etc.)
- Familiarity with leveraging operational datasets—such as SCADA, AMI (smart meter), or OMS (outage) data.
- Experience/knowledge in programming languages (e.g, Matlab, Python, JAX, C++, Julia, etc.) and automating complex studies or data handling tasks.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
It’d be great if you also had these:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license
- Previous experience in a software product environment, agile development, or working closely with software engineering teams.
- Understanding of the DER interconnection process from the developer’s perspective (e.g., hosting capacity analysis, system impact studies), not just utility screening.
- Functional knowledge of related technologies that impact planning, such as Distribution Automation (DA), Protection Coordination, Voltage Optimization (VO), Demand Response (DR), and Managed Charging.
- Thrive on ambiguity, setting own goals and effectively delivering to them in a very fast-changing environment
- Ability to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams who do not report into this role to get things done
- Experience working in a startup-like environment
