AI/ML Technical Program Manager (Ops and Data), X
Program ManagementMountain View, CA (HQ)
About X:
X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory with a mission of inventing and launching “moonshot” technologies that could someday make the world a radically better place. We are a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal: 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, not just 10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a startup. As an innovation engine, X focuses on repeatedly turning breakthrough-technology ideas into the foundations for large, sustainable businesses.
The Role:
We are seeking a deeply technical AI/ML Technical Program Manager (TPM) to join our dynamic R&D team. In addition to strong program management, this role requires direct, hands-on experience with machine learning models and applications. You will act as the cornerstone for our team, serving as the crucial link between groundbreaking research, efficient operations, and strategic data acquisition. With a strong passion for and applied experience in Large Language Models (LLMs), you will drive the end-to-end execution of complex projects, implement robust operational practices, and manage data partnerships. This role is instrumental in transitioning cutting-edge AI concepts into impactful, operational prototypes.
How you will make 10X Impact:
- Program Leadership: Lead the planning, execution, and tracking of complex, cross-functional AI/ML projects, acting as the team's central coordinator to improve velocity and remove roadblocks.
- Technical Implementation and Guidance: Provide hands-on leadership in building, deploying, and maintaining LLM-driven applications using modern MLOps principles and tools. You will also manage our central GPU compute cluster and directly guide the technical application of our AI/ML models.
- Data Strategy & Assessment: Collaborate with researchers to define data requirements for strategic initiatives, and proactively identify and manage potential external data partners.
- Stakeholder Management: Clearly communicate project status, risks, and dependencies to all stakeholders, including research teams, senior management, and external partners.
What you should have:
- A bachelor's degree in a technical field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering) or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Technical Program Management or a related role.
- 3+ years of experience specifically managing AI/ML projects.
- Demonstrable hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Building, fine-tuning, or deploying applications driven by transformers and LLMs.
- Implementing and managing MLOps principles, practices, and tooling.
- Strong understanding of the machine learning development lifecycle and cloud platforms (GCP, Azure, or AWS).
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to lead and influence cross-functional teams.
- A proven ability to manage complex technical projects and navigate ambiguity.
It’d be great if you also had these:
- Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field.
- Direct experience implementing and managing MLOps platforms/tools such as Vertex AI, Weights and Biases, etc.
- Experience with containerization technologies such as Kubernetes, Docker, etc.
- Proficiency in Python and common ML libraries/frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, HuggingFace).
- Experience working within an R&D or advanced technology development environment.
- Understanding of data engineering concepts and ETL pipelines relevant to ML.
