About the team:
Tapestry, is X’s moonshot for the electric grid. We are a team of software engineers, power systems experts and clean energy geeks who are impatient to tackle climate change head on through our energy system. Tapestry is on a mission to make the world’s electric grid visible so everyone, everywhere can access clean, affordable and reliable energy. We are working with partners around the world to create AI powered tools that will help everyone who works with the grid build and manage a carbon-free and secure electricity system.
Currently incubating at X, Alphabet’s innovation lab, we are now building the team that will scale Tapestry for more global impact. We are looking for people who are passionate about revolutionizing the energy sector to join us at this critical growth stage. You’ll have the chance to be part of a rapidly growing team that has the agility and impact of an early stage company, while building on world-class technology created at Alphabet. Learn more about Tapestry here.
About the role:
Tapestry, a fast-paced team within X (formerly Google X) is looking for a power system specialist with a strong background in transmission planning and a deep understanding of the Independent System Operators (ISOs). The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in working with both the external partners as well as the internal cross functional team in Tapestry, focusing on transmission modeling and simulation.
How you will make 10x impact:
- Innovate on developing breakthrough capabilities for power systems modeling and simulation.
- Work with a team of talented software engineers and power systems engineers to develop innovative techniques to simulate the grid end-to-end at scale.
- Rapidly develop prototypes to evaluate feasibility.
- Work with collaborators across X and Alphabet (e.g. Brain, Google Accelerated Sciences, etc.) to apply, modify, and develop new ideas, techniques, algorithms, and tools as needed.
What you should have:
- Bachelors or Masters in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related technical field
- 5+ years of experience in power systems analysis and transmission planning.
- Experience working with ISOs (Eastern Interconnection) and understanding their planning process and operational requirements.
- Strong understanding of power system principles, including power flow, short circuit analysis, transient stability, and economic dispatch.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software (e.g. PSS/E, PSLF, TARA, PSCAD, etc.)
- Experience/knowledge in scientific programming languages (e.g, Matlab, Python, JAX, C++, Julia, etc.) with a desire to expand into new areas of coding languages and processes.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Critical Competencies
- Total ownership: Takes responsibility and accountability for the key results to be delivered and passion and drive to own the problem in a specific area and run with it including architecture, design, implementation, testing and execution.
- Egoless: Puts team and Tapestry’s needs above own self interests and is customer facing.
- Works well across functions: Demonstrable partnership approach and an amiable disposition.
- Bias towards action with exceptional judgment: Takes guidance from the leadership team and key stakeholders, but moves fast, makes sound data driven recommendations and takes decisive action.
- Bias for execution and planning: Outcomes oriented and has demonstrable experience having previously run program management in fast moving software engineering organizations against a ‘high-bar’ plan without burning teams or stakeholder relationships.
- Deals With Ambiguity: In the absence of a clear path, creates the path and defines the resource map and strategy to address.
It’d be great if you also had these:
- Doctorate (or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related technical field.
- Passion for the energy and climate space
- Thrive on ambiguity, setting own goals and effectively delivering to them in a very fast-changing environment
- Ability to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams who do not report into this role to get things done
- Fast learner with capacity to learn about a wide-spread of different technologies
- Experience working in a startup-like environment
