Product Manager, Early Investigations
Product Management
Mountain View, CA

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory. We are a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal: 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, not just 10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a startup.

About the team:

X is Alphabet’s moonshot with a mission of inventing and launching “moonshot” technologies that we hope could someday make the world a radically better place. X’s early pipeline projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and accrue profits to Alphabet. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough-technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world and create meaningful business impact for Alphabet.

Our early pipelines portfolio is wide and covering many different fields: green hydrogen, fusion energy,  human mobility, chip design, predictive modeling, synthetic biology, etc

About the role:

As a Product Manager, you will use your technical expertise and business acumen to seamlessly collaborate with teams in engineering, and other cross functional team members (e.g. Partnerships, Marketing,) to develop complex business-level and product strategies (e.g. specific product strategies, new product business cases and associated PRDs), incubate new initiatives, provide analytics support (e.g. define key product metrics, perform in-depth analysis to answer important questions on product trends/business performance). Through your leadership and strategic planning skills, you will keep teams focused on producing thoughtful and innovative solutions to complex problems, inspiring your stakeholders and end users alike.

How you will make 10x impact:

  • Lead market sizing, competitive and regulatory analyses, and value chain mapping for projects where markets, competitors, and/or regulations may or may not exist.
  • Help identify key risks where projects could fail, and ways to stress-test them as quickly as possible by speaking to potential external partners.
  • Present findings to project leads and X executives to guide product strategy for projects.
  • Generate ideas for new products and features; use market research to define a vision and strategy for product development.
  • Create mocks, product requirement docs and feature documentation to specify how a product or product feature should be built out.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineers and user experience experts to reach the best possible version of a feature or product to bring to market.
  • Work closely with members of cross-functional groups (e.g., Finance, Sales, Legal, Marketing); initiate collaboration between technical teams and non-technical teams throughout the project life cycle.

What you should have:

  • MS/PhD in deep tech or experience launching deep tech.
  • 8 years of experience in product management, consulting, co-founder or related technical role.
  • Experience working in a tech or research start up environment.
  • At least 5 years of experience building and shipping technical products.
  • High level degree of autonomy - capable of leading complex projects and strategies with limited direction.
  • Experience in the full scope of product management; developing product vision and roadmap, engaging with customers, writing PRDs, driving a smooth development process, coordinating launches, and achieving post-launch success.
  • Very strong strategy and analytical skills. Ability to gather and analyze large quantities of information, and transform them into insightful product and business recommendations. Good at problem stating and problem solving, and turning ambiguous problem spaces into radical solutions. Must be able to break down problems independently.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and communicate to a wide variety of audiences at multiple levels of the company.
  • Experience with product development of AI/ML-enabled technologies.
  • Motivated by making the world a better place through technology, and wanting to be part of a team that makes this happen.

It’d be great if you also had these:

  • Flourish with ambiguity, setting own goals and effectively delivering to them in a very fast-changing environment.
  • Experience leading complex strategic and operational initiatives, working through technical, operational, legal/policy and business issues.
  • Comfort with new technology and thinking outside the box to develop and implement short and long-term creative solutions.
  • Experience strengthening partner relationships and interacting with Engineering teams.
  • Experience defining project resources (SWEs) needed to develop a first product on the market.
  • Ability to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams who do not report into this role to get things done.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way.
