X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory. We are a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal: 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, not just 10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a startup.
About the team:
We are a team working to rapidly decarbonize the electric grid. Our mission is to help create a shared understanding of what is happening on the grid for everyone who is involved in building, managing and using it.
The team is multi-disciplinary, bringing together expertise in machine learning, computer vision, and geospatial analysis. What unites us is a drive for impact and willingness to look ridiculous. We celebrate spectacular failures. Learn more about Tapestry here.
About the role:
X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing new ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.
As a member of Tapestry’s Power Systems team, you’ll have the opportunity to work with talented software engineers, Product Managers, power system experts and Business teams to accelerate Tapestry’s mission to decarbonize the electric grid. Identifying the problem is only half the job; you also figure out the solution and drive creative solutions to successful outcomes .
How you’ll make 10X impact:
- Develop breakthrough power systems algorithms for the electric grid.
- Innovate on developing new capabilities for power systems modeling and simulation based on modern computational systems.
- Work with a team of talented software engineers and power systems engineers to develop innovative techniques to simulate the grid end-to-end at scale.
- Rapidly develop prototypes to evaluate feasibility.
- Work with collaborators across X and Alphabet (e.g. Brain, Google Accelerated Sciences, etc.) to apply, modify, and develop new ideas, techniques, algorithms, and tools as needed.
What you should have:
- Doctorate (or equivalent experience) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or related technical field.
- 5+ years of experience in power systems work.
- Experience working with simulation software such as power flow, dynamic simulation, and electromagnetic transient programs (e.g. PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP, PSCAD, CYME, etc.)
- Experience in electrical simulation including system modeling, numerical methods, solver choices, performance optimization, or solution analysis.
- Experience with electrical circuit modeling, control systems, power electronics, switching converters and inverters, or electric machine models.
- Knowledge of numerical methods such as nonlinear/linear differential equations, differentiation and integration, solving systems of equations, time discretization and simulation.
- Are a skilled and efficient programmer in scientific programming languages (e.g, Matlab, Python, JAX, C++, Julia, etc.) with a desire to expand into new areas of coding languages and processes.
It’d be great if you also had these:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with hardware and processor architectures.
- Thrive on ambiguity, setting own goals and effectively delivering to them in a very fast-changing environment
- Ability to influence without authority, working with technical and cross-functional teams who do not report into this role to get things done
- Distinctive problem solving and analysis skills, combined with impeccable business judgment, leadership skills, and ability to communicate with a senior management team
- Attention to detail, project management, and organizational skills
- Fast learner with capacity to learn about a wide-spread of different technologies & industries
