X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory. We are a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal: 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, not just 10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a startup.
The Team
Born from X, the moonshot factory, and working alongside teams at Google, we’re building a new type of robot. One that can learn by itself, to help anyone with (almost) anything. With one foot in today, and the other in tomorrow, we seek to turn the helper robots of science fiction novels into reality. Doing this requires taking on the hardest problems in robotics. All so we can work towards a future where helper robots are a part of a better everyday, for everyone.
We know that no company, no moonshot, no wild idea is greater than the efforts of the people behind it. Our team is thoughtful, driven and deliberately diverse, working together in a creative and collaborative environment, where everyone’s perspectives and expertise is valued.
We’re looking for a Robotics Controls & Systems Analysis Engineer. Find out more about us, and meet the people behind the robots on our website.
Role & Responsibilities
You will work closely with roboticists, hardware, software, manufacturing, reliability and test engineers. You will ensure robotic system requirements are achieved through design analysis and characterization, controller design, system integration, and test programs to deliver robust and performant robots.
Your Impact
- Validate designs of actuators and sensors by scoping and implementing experiments to verify and validate performance, expose issues, and identify root causes either independently or working with Test Engineers and Reliability Engineers. Assess impact of issues on the system
- Analyze system requirements, architecture, and design using modeling, simulation, system identification, and data-driven techniques. Drive architectural and design decisions including sensor and actuator selection from a comprehensive perspective to produce controllable systems
- Design and implement controllers and estimators for robotic subsystems and integrated systems
- Directly support systems engineering efforts, participate in safety analyses, and contribute to design reviews
Skills you should have
- Solid understanding of mechatronic system modeling, characterization, and verification
- Ability to independently craft and run system identification experiments
- Experience with motor controllers, integrated actuators, and sensors
- Experience with kinematics, dynamics, and controls of integrated mechatronic systems
- Strong Python coding skills for implementing experiments and processing results
What we hope you have
- Kinematic and dynamic modeling of mobile manipulator experience
- Ability to read modern C++ and work within a larger software ecosystem fluidly
