X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.
We are the Everyday Robot Project at X, a moonshot that brings together people with varied skill sets and backgrounds to build a future where robots can be as helpful to people in the physical world as computers now are in the virtual world. We believe that the future of robotics and AI can unfold in a way that has lasting positive impact in our everyday lives and our wider communities. Our mission is to build learning robots that help people everyday and everywhere live better lives. Creating robots that can learn in different ways involves navigating some of the hardest challenges in robotics today. It’s an ambiguous and iterative process, so we’ve worked hard to create a team environment where collaboration and creativity can flourish, and where people always feel comfortable bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the table.
We're looking for SWEs excited about robotics that have a passion for making robotics systems come to life. As a part of the hardware testing team, you will provide software and hardware solutions to drive our project testing in design, manufacturing, reliability, and operations. This role offers a chance to innovate and make an impact on a growing project, working with a diverse group of roboticists, designers, software engineers, and technicians.
You will design and implement critical components of our hardware test SW infrastructure. You’ll be writing code to add features to our automated test framework, drivers for our test hardware, interfaces to our robot system, and following good coding practice with unit and integration tests. Your work will span services running in production all the way down to tests directly interfacing with robot hardware. Your expertise in SW is balanced out with a breadth of cross functional experience or interest. You like your bytes to have an impact on objects in the real world - testing our motion and sensing systems as they interact with the world. Your work will drive quality and product excellence for our robots, generating insights that we learn from to improve the product and delight our users.
Responsibilities
- Write and maintain testing libraries for a variety of HW systems with high stability and reliability
- Provide solutions for automation of data pipelines to generate data for our test ecosystem
- Plan, design, develop, validate and deploy hardware testing solutions through the full product life cycle (i.e. prototype development, characterization, calibration, and validation)
- Generate insights and recommendations from test data to improve product excellence
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated industry experienced programmer
- Expert in Python, experienced developing on Linux
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute self-directed projects
- Track record of collaborative coding, SW design, and code review
- Effective collaborator, comfortable working on multidisciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with automation for testing HW products, in a manufacturing environment
- Ability to set up, manage, and run data pipelines in a production environment
- Proficient in C++
