Hardware Optical Engineer, Early Stage Project, X

Hardware Engineering

Mountain View, CA

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.

About the role:

As an optical hardware engineer in a multi-disciplinary group, you will rely on your creativity and your diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to new engineering problems.  You will be part of a team working on a complicated hardware product. You will have the opportunity to define the capabilities of a product from its very inception. The team includes hardware and software engineers.  Good communication skills are necessary to ensure the successful integration of the various components.

How you would make 10x impact:

  • Own optical system performance from end-to-end. This includes custom imaging lens design, sensor selection, image quality and stereo camera calibration.
  • Develop precision laser pointing systems for industrial machines.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers across multiple disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, photonics, software, control systems, and others) to define logical flow of test and verification activities. Provide design input to improve testability, coverage, and throughput, as well as identify opportunities to reduce testing cost.
  • Execute tests, together with Engineers, track progress through integration steps, and contribute to documenting test outcomes.
  • Ensure tracking and traceability of all testing activity from component to full system integration, and continuing into operational phase.
  • Work with manufacturing team to transfer test plans, fixtures, and other key know-how to contract manufacturers. Develop methods of automation for key steps in the integration plan.

What you should have:

  • BS in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • 3-5 years of experience working with optical components and systems
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Working knowledge of optical components and technical problem solving skills.
  • Familiarity and hands-on experience with complex optical and opto-mechanical systems.

It would be great if you also had these:

  • Master's degree (or higher) in Physics, Optical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.
  • Prior experience with integration of complex optical and opto-mechanical systems.
  • Experience with laser safety for commercial products, and associated compliance requirements.
  • Experience with low-level firmware and operating system software and with system-level electrical or optical simulation and analysis.
  • Prior experience with integrating multi-disciplinary and high-complexity systems. Direct experience in Design for Test practice for similar optical systems.
  • Breadth across multiple key disciplines relevant to product (e.g., optics, beam steering mechanisms, high-speed electronics, signal processing, software,), with depth in one or more area.

About X, the moonshot factory

X creates radical new technologies to solve some of the world’s biggest problems. We develop uncomfortably ambitious, potentially world-changing new ideas such as self-driving cars, balloon-powered Internet and smart contact lenses. We’re a team of makers, entrepreneurs, engineers, designers and scientists with deep technical expertise who love the challenge of the seemingly impossible. We believe that a culture of psychological safety creates the foundation of trust and respect necessary to build moonshots. X was formerly known as Google[x] and is part of Alphabet.

At X, we don't just accept difference - we celebrate it, we support it, and we thrive on it for the benefit of our employees, our products and our community. We are proud to be an equal opportunity workplace and is an affirmative action employer. We are committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity or Veteran status.
