Hardware Engineering

Mountain View

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.

About the role:

As a mechanical engineer in a multi-disciplinary group, you will rely on your creativity and your diverse range of engineering experience to explore solutions to new engineering problems.  You will be part of a team working on a complicated hardware product. You will have the opportunity to define the capabilities of a product from its very inception. The team includes hardware and software engineers.  Good communication skills are necessary to ensure the successful integration of the various components. A deep understanding of both mechanical design and analysis is highly desirable.

How you will make 10x impact:

  • Perform work in research, development, design, testing, analysis, and prototyping of new electronic hardware within a fast-paced engineering group.
  • Work with designers and perform analysis for manufacturability.
  • Design, develop, and test all aspects of mechanical components and equipment using SolidWorks.
  • Optimize mechanical designs for size, weight, and durability.
  • Prototype mechanical designs using rapid prototyping technology.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with electrical systems.
  • Develop and maintain strong functional relationships across multidisciplinary teams to anticipate future design requirements and interfaces.
  • Interface with vendors and other outside sources.

What you should have:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience with SolidWorks.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping.
  • An understanding the difference between quick prototypes and production systems

It would be great if you also had these:

  • Capable of multi-tasking in a dynamic, challenging, and rewarding environment
  • Experience in a machine shop
  • Knowledge of plastics, optics, motion control, and ocean engineering

About X, the moonshot factory
