Hardware Engineering

Mountain View, CA

About the team:

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.

About the Role:

A growing team of X'ers are developing and manufacturing new electromechanical hardware designed for outdoor marine applications. As a manufacturing engineer, you will design, establish, deliver, and maintain manufacturing solutions for new products. You will be involved in initial design, prototyping and evaluation of designs for precision electro-optical-mechanical systems. You will also collaborate with the internal team and external suppliers to ensure successful scale-up of the manufacturing process, equipment, and assembly line.

How you will make 10x impact:

  • Act as Manufacturing Engineering liaison to industrial design, product design and engineering teams. Understand project requirements, assess novel manufacturing technologies, and develop a manufacturing plan.
  • Develop and optimize assembly process, line layout, fixtures and equipment. Write process instructions. Train technicians to follow process steps.
  • Implement test process and equipment. Manage and improve manufacturing yield.
  • Work with Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs), Contract Manufacturers (CMs), and suppliers to prioritize and solve manufacturing and design related issues. Drive all design, material, process, and equipment issues to closure.
  • Drive continuous improvement through the supply chain, resulting in reduced cycle time, increased yields and improved cost. Some limited travel to suppliers.
  • Design, develop and implement new quality plans or improvements to existing processes, tooling and equipment.
  • Analyze and implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) to the manufacturing organization.

What you should have:

  • BS degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials Science or Physical Sciences
  • 5+ years of experience with manufacturing tools and processes
  • Experience launching new products at Contract Manufacturers (and/or Original Design Manufacturers).
  • Demonstrated process development background and experience with design tools (CAD, EE design, etc)
  • Excellent communication and people skills

It would be great if you also had these:

  • 10 years of work experience, including experience in optics manufacturing environment.
  • MS or PhD engineering degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong record of taking new electro/mechanical/optical products from design phase through to medium/high volume manufacturing.
  • Experience with optical alignment processes and tools
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification and lean manufacturing.
