Machine Learning Technical Lead, X

About the team:

X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, world-changing ideas are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. For X to be successful, we have to repeatedly turn breakthrough technology ideas into products that solve large problems in the world, and create meaningful businesses for Alphabet.

About the role:

We are currently looking for our first full-time hire to serve as the technical lead for our modeling efforts. Since it is a small team made up of part-time support, this means you will still spend the majority of your time developing models (both machine-learning based and conventional) in python, but as the technical lead you will also need to build and manage the technical team, drive the technical roadmap, get out and engage partners, and communicate internally. The work will be difficult and require agile navigation of a shifting strategic landscape, but gives the opportunity to be on the ground floor and shape a potential Alphabet-sized effort.

Experience in machine learning/deep learning and probabilistic models is essential. You should be able to easily and rapidly write code, iterate upon it, and scale it. You also should be familiar with the latest research in those areas.

We are looking for someone with leadership potential, who can function independently, get things done without significant management, be a thought partner with the project lead and leadership at X; a go-getter that can help bring the project to the next level technically, administratively, and strategically.

How you will make 10x impact:

  • Generate professional-quality code and analysis
  • Be the one ultimately responsible for the computational pipeline, including infrastructure/DevOps, machine learning models, statistical models, and analytical packages
  • Manage the day-to-day work of technical staff; help recruit new resources
  • Be a thought partner on the strategy and execution on the project. This will include refining the “moonshot” vision/hypothesis, as well as setting the long, medium, and short term milestones and tactics for the project.
  • Foster and manage active partnerships for data collection or generation. Landscape for new ones and help develop/initiate promising leads
  • Foster and manage active partnerships for consumer pull. Landscape for new ones and help develop/initiate promising leads
  • Assist in the communications with key stakeholders; be an advocate for the project

What you should have:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or related quantitative field, or B.S./M.S. in Computer Science or related quantitative field with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • A skilled practitioner in machine learning practice, including the development of novel dimensionality reduction algorithms, model training, and analysis
  • Expertise in coding in python, willingness to work in R when necessary
  • Strong desire to become an expert in agricultural systems, plant biology, and bioinformatics
  • Patience, positive attitude, and a strong desire to improve the world through technology
  • Self-starter with a team-oriented work style
  • Strategic thinking - ability to translate strategic goals into research tasks
  • Ability to work and thrive in a startup-like environment e.g. comfortable with ambiguity/shifting priorities, ability to work under stressful conditions or tight timelines for limited periods, scrappiness. A voracious and fast learner
  • Strong communication skills, including the composition and delivery of oral presentations, written documents, and slide decks. The ability to communicate effectively with multiple levels including executive leadership, peers, managers, and junior staff
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to keep multiple priorities moving at the same time
  • Excellent planning, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to work on-site at our offices in Mountain View, CA

It’d be great if you also had these:

  • Experience managing a small software team
  • Experience with Google Cloud Platform, internal Google computing resources, or DevOps in general
  • Knowledge or experience in synthetic or molecular biology
  • Knowledge or experience in the agriculture sector and sustainability

 Manager Expectations:

We believe every Xer should have a great manager. Whether you are an applicant evaluating a prospective manager, or an applicant to a management role, these are the expectations for our managers:

  • [Psychological safety first] We can't build moonshots without a foundation of trust and respect. Create space for team members to be seen, heard, and understood.
  • [Continuous development] Take the time to invest in yourself and those around you. Create an environment where team members are empowered to do the same for one another.
  • [Build a team with intention] Assemble a diverse team of people who have the substance and stamina to reach the moon.
  • [Mission is critical] Why are we here? What are we working towards? Get clear on the answers, and then make sure your team understands where you’re headed and how to get there together.
  • [Nurture our culture] Be a role model of X’s values and champion creativity, passion, and play.
  • [Be accountable] Everything at X is a team effort, but the buck stops with managers. Celebrate your team’s successes and own the failures. Taking responsibility earns respect.
