Marketing + Creative Storyteller

X is a moonshot factory where uncomfortably ambitious, potentially world-changing new ideas such as self-driving cars, sustainable agriculture powered by artificial intelligence, and new solutions for ocean health are developed and taken out into the world. X projects have the potential to transform the lives of billions of people and make the world a radically better place. We’re a team of makers, entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists with deep technical expertise who love the challenge of the seemingly impossible.

We are looking for a bold and creative marketer/storyteller who is both a fountain of ideas, and hungry to turn them into reality and business impact. In this role you will:

  • Help moonshot teams articulate their narrative in a way that’s easy for non-experts to understand
  • Help shape awareness and perception of X among key audiences though unconventional and scrappy creative experiments, iterating to find what resonates.
  • Hunt for stories that reflect the reality of life at X: weird and wonderful, wildly ambitious, sometimes funny and sometimes heartbreaking.
  • Help X build and nurture a community of like-minded moonshot takers and allies.
  • Help Xers to share their stories (about the technology they are building, their journey of innovation)

The scope of this work may include:

  • Diving deep into complex technologies to surface with compelling ideas and stories
  • Developing creative and scrappy campaigns and multimedia assets (e.g. content programs: social media, videos, graphics, booklets, blogs, websites etc) to inspire various audiences
  • Managing agency partners to produce excellent creative work. Conduct initial briefing, budgeting, creative ideating, evaluation and refinement of ideas, and execution of final production.

This role requires you to be both a clear-sighted entrepreneur as well as a supportive member of a cross functional team. X combines the speed and non-linear path of an early stage startup with the reach and impact (and occasional complexity) of a global company. Your job description/role definition will likely change with some frequency; folks who do best at X tend to think that sounds like a ton of fun vs. frustrating and/or confusing.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Love of ambiguity.
  • 5 years of experience in marketing or communications.
  • Startup experience (whether that’s in tech, the nonprofit sector or somewhere else.) Love of entrepreneurs/innovators and their intense creativity and audacity and determination; patience with the resulting messes and other side effects of early stage innovation/entrepreneurship
  • BA/BS degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience managing/producing/making media (from gifs to installation art) that creates a strong emotional connection and sense of awe with the intended audience, and/or reaches them in unexpected ways.
  • Humble, open-minded, and committed to finding the human story and impact behind new technology.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, fluency in English.
  • An optimistic and resilient spirit.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Willing to flex between higher level strategy and detailed executional work.
  • Ability to demonstrate creative thinking across both digital and physical worlds to deliver a rich storytelling experience
  • Comfort with complicated technology and science topics, a knack for explaining them simply to a variety of audiences, and a constant curiosity and a learning mindset.
  • Unusual hobbies/obsessions/eclecticism welcome

As a government contractor subject to Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRAA), we request this information in order to measure the effectiveness of the outreach and positive recruitment efforts we undertake pursuant to VEVRAA. Classification of protected categories is as follows:

A "disabled veteran" is one of the following: a veteran of the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service who is entitled to compensation (or who but for the receipt of military retired pay would be entitled to compensation) under laws administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs; or a person who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.

A "recently separated veteran" means any veteran during the three-year period beginning on the date of such veteran's discharge or release from active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval, or air service.

An "active duty wartime or campaign badge veteran" means a veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. military, ground, naval or air service during a war, or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized under the laws administered by the Department of Defense.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

Because we do business with the government, we must reach out to, hire, and provide equal opportunity to qualified people with disabilities1. To help us measure how well we are doing, we are asking you to tell us if you have a disability or if you ever had a disability. Completing this form is voluntary, but we hope that you will choose to fill it out. If you are applying for a job, any answer you give will be kept private and will not be used against you in any way.

If you already work for us, your answer will not be used against you in any way. Because a person may become disabled at any time, we are required to ask all of our employees to update their information every five years. You may voluntarily self-identify as having a disability on this form without fear of any punishment because you did not identify as having a disability earlier.

How do I know if I have a disability?
